Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political defections—where politicians switch allegiance from one party to another—are a common feature of many political systems, including Nigeria’s. In Jos North Local Government, Plateau State, political defections have had a significant impact on the dynamics of local elections. These defections often occur in response to changing political strategies, power struggles, or dissatisfaction with party leadership. While defections can sometimes bring new ideas and coalitions, they can also undermine electoral outcomes by creating instability, diminishing party loyalty, and altering the balance of power. This study aims to investigate the causes of political defections in Jos North and assess how they influence electoral outcomes, voter behavior, and party alignment (Tijani & Ismaila, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political defections in Jos North Local Government have been a recurring issue, especially during election periods. These defections raise questions about their impact on the stability of political parties, voter trust, and overall electoral outcomes. While defections can provide strategic advantages for some politicians, they may also destabilize the political landscape and lead to confusion among voters. This study seeks to explore the causes and consequences of political defections in Jos North and how they influence local elections (Alhassan & Durojaiye, 2024).
